| The Motorcycle Test - What Can I Expect ?
The Motorcycle Test is conducted by the DSA (Driving Standards Agency) at a DSA Driving Test Centre and is split into two parts - Module 1 (20 minutes) and Module 2 (50 minutes).
For both Modules the test will start with production of the relevant paperwork and an eye sight check.
Please note: If you took your CBT on an automatic moped you will need to take an extra days training on a geared bike before starting.
Module 1 Test
This is a 20 minute off-road test, covering extended slow control exercises (including a slow timed ride and U-turn), a 32mph emergency stop, a 20mph corner and a 32mph swerve.
Module 2 Test
Please note that in order to take a Module 2 you will need to have a valid CBT certificate, Motorcycle Theory Test certificate and Module 1 pass certificate.
This is a 40 minute on-road test, during which the examiner will, in most cases, use a radio to give the candidate directions. There will be no emergency stop and U-turn.
At the beginning of the test the examiner will ask just one of ten possible combinations at the start of the test. These brief 'Show Me/ Tell Me' questions are about the controls and maintenance of the motorcycle.
Restricted Licence Quickstart Courses
When you are ready to ride a bigger bike or just want to get rid of your 'L' plates, you will need to take the full motorcycle test. You must be aged 17 or over and have passed the CBT and Motorcycle Theory test.
A Driving Standards Agency examiner will follow you for about 30 minutes to access your ability to ride. During the ride you will perform various exercises.
Restricted: Once you pass your test on a 125cc bike you will obtain a full motorcycle licence. You will be restricted to riding bikes of 33 horsepower (or less) for two years, but after that you can choose to ride any bike that you like. Please note that this is the only bike licence available to those aged 17-20.
Unrestricted (Direct Assess): This test allows the rider to use any machine regardless of cc or power output. The rider must be over 21 and the motorcycle must exceed 46.5 bhp to take the test.
Module 1 Training and Test - A one day course designed to improve your machine control and riding skills, and prepare you for the various manoeuvres that take place during the Motorcycle Test - Module 1.
Module 2 Training and Test - A one day course which will fully prepare you for the Module 2 Test. Most of the day will be road riding, with some time spent covering the manoevres required to pass the test.
DAS course - A one day course for those training on a 500cc motorcycle.
You will be introduced to the difference between small and large motorcycles, and become accustomed to the high and slow speed control required by a larger motorcycle.
